Yankees Get First Win Of the Season, and At the Right Time
Yes, the wait is over. On a sunny Thursday afternoon in Baltimore, MD, the Yankees got their first win of the season. It was a “bird killing” 11-2 victory over the O’s. We can now all breath a sigh of relief…at the moment.
Wednesday was ugly. This game had high expectations because the O’s had their 35-year-old rookie from Japan, Uehara going up against Hideki Matsui also of Japan. They were former teamates on the Youmiori Giants.
The Orioles scored all of their 7 runs off of Chein-Ming Wang in the 3+ innings that he pitched. Two of them came in the first inning. The last five came in the fourth, Wang’s last inning. Nick Markakis hit a two-run shot off of Wang that inning. The Yankees bullpen did it’s job, holding the Orioles both hitless and scorless for 6+ innings.
The Yankees got one run in the fourth inning, to cut the lead in half (at the time). Then the Orioles got their five runs in the bottom half of the inning. In the sixth inning, the Bombers got another run. It wasn’t until the ninth inning that things began to look better for the Yankees. Jeter hit a two-run shot with two outs to make the score 5-7. But George Sherrill closed the game and got the save as the Orioles were victorious for the second game in a row.
Thursday’s game had many firsts for the Pinstripers. For one, A.J. Burnett got them their first strikeout by a starting pitcher. He also lasted the longest out of the three pichers, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs only. In the bottom of the third inning, Burnett got out of a jam, bases loaded, 2 outs, count 3-1, 1 run already in. He struck out the batter on the next two pitches.
Mark Teixeira got his first home run off of Simon in the fourth inning. Nick Swisher followed with a two-run home run (that was almost caught) off of Simon. Robinson Cano got a two-run homer in the seventh off of Bass. In the ninth, Ramiro Pena got the first base-hit of his major league career off of Ray. The Yankees got their first win of the season.
To Kansas City the team travels next.
Until then, see ya!
Yanks Open New Stadium With A Bang
On Friday night, the Yankees had the first of two spring training games against the Cubs to open the new stadium. The ballpark looks great from what was shown on the YES network. Reggie Jackson threw out the first pitch as he did in the last game in the old stadium to start things off.
The Yankees were down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, and guess who gets the first hit? Jeter! Too bad it is “unofficial”. Later, with the Yankees down 3-0, and one man on base, Robbie Cano drills one into the right field seats. Now the score is 3-2. Then, a bit later, Hedeki Matsui careens one off the right field foul pole. Finally, Cody Ransom, who will be filling in at third base for A-Rod until he is heathy, does the same but to the left field foul pole. They just wanted to make sure that the foul poles were able to hold up and be sturdy enough. The Yanks won 6-4.
Yesterday, they played their second spring training game. Alfonso Soriano, ex-Pinstriper, opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning. Derek Jeter gave the Yanks the lead in the bottom of the second with a three-run shot. Yankee newcomer Mark Teixeira hit his first home run, of two, in the 3rd, a solo shot. His second came in the 4th inning with two men on base. Shelley Duncan added to the slugfest with a solo shot of his own in the bottom half of the eighth. Robbie Cano had an RBI single in the game. The final score was 10-1.
I can’t wait for the season to begin (for the Yankees) tomorrow! I have a feeling it is going to be a memorable season.
Peace
