Phightin’ Phils Win in Philly for Phanatics!
The baseball season for 2007-08 is over. After a thrilling start to Game 5 on Monday, they waited out the longest rain delay: two and a half days.
It was wet, it was wild, it was everything inbetween on Monday night. Even the commentators Joe Buck and Tim McCarver said “hydroplaining is introduced into baseball.” The first time they stopped the game was when the Phillies were up 2-1 at the end of the 5th inning. That was when the rains were a pourin’. Phans ran for cover as they waited out at least a half an hour. The tarps were pulled off and the two teams were back to work.
The Rays tied the game up in the top of the 6th. And then, the tarps came back on, eventually calling the game.
…
Thursday was a different story. For one thing, the game temperature was a “balmy” 44 degrees farenhieght (haha).
First of all, the “starting pitchers” for the completion of the game were none other than Grant Balfore for the Rays and Ryan Madson for the Phills. Balfore gave up a lead-off double to Geoff Jenkins, who scored after moving to third and Iwamura not handeling a Jason Werth pop-up. In the top of the 7th, Rocco Baldeli showed he’s still got some juice left when he lined the game-tying homer to left. Chase Utley ended the Rays’ threat on a great fake throw to 1st getting the out at home. The Phills answered back with a double off the wall in left-center from Pat Burell. Eric Bruntlett, the pinch-runner for Burell, went to third on a groundout. He then scored what would be the winning run on Pedro Feliz’s single.
Brad Lidge got Eric Hinske to strike out for the last out of the ninth and the game. Although, he did allow the tying run to reach second base with one out. J.C. Romero was awarded the win, recording 4 outs before letting Lidge finish the job. It was the first major championship for any pro sports teams in Philly since the 76ers won the NBA finals in 1983.
“I’ve never felt better in my life to get pummeled like that,” Lidge said about his teammates piling ontop of him after the final out, as is tradition for any baseball team. Ryan Howard was the first to jump ontop of Lidge and the Phillies catcher, Carlos Ruiz.
“We’re winners,” said Howard. “Rejoice. Nobody can take that away from the city of Philadelphia.”
Cole Hammels was given the “World Series MVP” honors to cap it all off.
It was a magical night for the Phillies, their Phaithful Phans, and the entire city of Philedelphia. The Phillies had won.
C ya next year for preseason! (Possibly sooner, idk)
Game 2
It was another thriller @ the Trop two nights ago. This time it was in the favor of the Tampa Bay Rays.
James Sheilds took the helm for the Rays against the Philidelphia Phillies’ Brett Meyers. Sheilds held the Phills scorless for 5 2/3 innings of work. He struck out 4 batters and scattered 7 hits over that span.
The Rays began the game when Akinori Iwamura drew a lead-off walk in the 1st inning. He then moved to third when B.J. Upton singled to right. Upton made it to third on the hit when the right fielder bobbled the ball. Iwamura and Upton scored on successive ground outs by Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria to put them ahead 2-0. In the second inning, Upton singled to right again to drive in Diooner Navarro. Rocco Baldelli was thrown out at home though so that they had to settle for a 3-0 lead. Jason Bartlett got down a bunt on the safety squeeze in the fourth inning scoring Cliff Floyd to go ahead 4-0.
David Price surrendered a solo shot in the 8th inning to give the Phillies their first score of the night. He then gave up a lead-off double to Phills’ Carlos Ruiz in the 9th who then scored on a one-out error. Price then struck out Chase Utley and got Ryan Howard to hit into a grounder for Iwamura to pick up.
Now with the Fall Classic tied at 1 apiece, the series heads to Phily tonight.
I can’t wait!
And the Fall Classic Begins…
The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! And it started off with a bang as it should. With one out and one man on in the top of the first, Phillies’ Chase Utley bolted a two-run homer to right field. Scott Kazmir was at the helm for the Rays and Cole Hammels for the Phillies.
Utley’s home run took the Tampa Bay crowd out of it for a while untill the Rays scored 2 runs in the 4th inning. Those would be their only runs of the game, leaving them down 3-2. They loaded the bases up a couple of times, but nothing ever came out of it. Brad Lidge finished the game for the Phillies with a quick 9th inning. He struck out the first two batters on attempted checked swings and the last popped out to end the game.
Now the Phillies have the 1 game advantage over the surprise-team Rays (not that a 1-0 game advantage is much, seeing the Rays won the ALCS being down 1-0).
Game 2 is on FOX again, so keep your eyes out!
