Boston vs. Yankees ’09 Part Two: Sox Sweep Yankees in the New Stadium
The Yankees just finished facing the Red Sox in the second series of the season. This time around, it was in the Bronx at the brand new Yankee Stadium.
Monday’s game went down as such:
Jon Lester was the pitcher for the Red Sox, while Phil Hughes took the mound, for his second start, for the Yanks. Lester ended up throwing 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks, 10 strikeouts, and 2 home runs. Hughes threw 4 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, 4 walks, 2 strikeouts, and one home run.
The Sox scored one run in consecutive innings from the 1st all through the 4th. Pedroia walked, Ortiz then doubled, and Pedroia scored on a passed ball with Youkilis at the plate. Then, in the 2nd inning, Lowell hit a solo shot to left field. In the 3rd inning, with two outs, Drew singled, followed by a single by Bay, and a Lowell single scoring Drew. Ellsbury hit a ground-rule double, moved to 3rd on Pedroia’s fly out, and Ortiz doubled to bring home Ellsbury in the 4th inning.
Finally, the Yankees’ bats came alive in the fifth inning. Berroa got to first on a fielder’s choice and then scored on Damon’s homer. Teixiera then hit a solo shot to give the Yanks a total of 3 runs for the inning.
J.D. Drew was hit by a pitch and scored on Bay’s home run in the eighth to score the last run, the Yankees’ score half of it at the time.
To conclude all scoring, Teixiera hits his second homer of the night in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Final Score: BOS: 6, NYY: 4
Season Series: BOS: 4, NYY: 0
Tuesday’s matchup had almost the same result:
Josh Beckett was back at it again against the Bombers and Joba Chamberlain threw for the Yanks. Beckett threw 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 10 hits, one walk, 5 strikeouts, and one home run. Chamberlain pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks, a career-high 12 strikeouts, and a lone home run.
Again, the Sox were out ontop first. In the first inning, Ellsbury singled, Pedroia singled, and Ortiz singled to score Ellsbury. Bay homers scoring Pedroia and Ortiz to take the early 3-0 lead.
The lone scoring inning for the Yanks was in the 3rd. Molina singled. Jeter singled. Then, bringing them both home, Damon hits a home run to tie the game.
By the time the 8th inning came around, the game was still tied at 3 apiece. Then Bay got to first on a fielding error by 3rd baseman Ramiro Pena, stole 2nd base, and moved to 3rd on Lowell’s ground out. Drew was intentionally walked, Jeff Bailey was hit by pitch, and Bay scores on Varitek’s sac fly, Drew moving to third. Green singles, bringing Drew home. They truely won it in the ninth on four consecutive walks, including ones to Pedroia who scored, Oritz, Bay, and Bailey.
Final Score: BOS: 7, NYY: 3
Season Series: BOS: 5, NYY: 0
I say it’s time to turn the tables and start winning game again. That’s all I’m looking for is to have a nice winning streak. It will happen…eventually.
Boston vs. Yankees ’09 Part One: Brooms out in Beantown
Well, the first series between the Bombers from the Bronx and The Bo Sox from Boston has come to an end. Unfortunately, none of it went the Yankees way.
Friday’s game went down like this:
Joba Chamberlain took the hill for New York while Jon Lester threw for Boston. Chamberlain pitched 5.1 innings, allowing only two runs off of 9 hits, and fanning 2 batters. He got out of several jams with four double plays. Lester pitched 6 innings of two-run ball off of 7 hits, fanning 7 batters as well.
In the 1st inning, the Sox got it going when Jacoby Elsbury hit a single, advanced to 2nd base on a balk, stole 3rd base, and scored on a passed ball. The Yanks began their scoring in the 4th inning with a run-scoring double by Cody Ransom, scoring Melky Cabrera. Derek Jeter then hit an RBI double bringing in the second run.
Then, in the 6th, Mike Lowell of the Red Sox doubled off of the Green Monster and scored off of Nick Green’s single later in the inning to tie the score at 2. The Yankees answered in the top of the 7th on Mark Teixiera’s tie-breaking single off of Red Sox reliever Hideki Okijima, scoring Jeter from 2nd base. Johnny Damon scored off of Robinson Cano’s sac fly later that inning.
Usually, a closer is supposed to hold on to the win for the team. Unfortunatelly, that did not happen for Mariano Rivera. Jason Bay hit the game-tying two-run homer, that sent the game into extra innings, off of Mo. It was very un-Mo like for sure. Kevin Youkilis then delivered the game-winning solo shot in the bottom of the 11th for the Sox.
Final Score: NYY: 4, BOS 5
Season Series: BOS: 1, NYY: 0
Saturday’s game wasn’t much better:
Josh Beckett took the ball for the Sox, while A. J. Burnett did so for the Yanks. Beckett went 5 innings, allowed 8 runs over 10 hits, had 3 strike-outs, 4 walks, and 2 home-runs. Burnett also went 5 innings, allowed 8 runs over 8 hits, fanned 3 batters, had 3 walks, and 2 home-runs. His trouble inning was the 4th where he gave up 5 runs.
This game, the Yankees were out on top first, in the top of the 1st inning, with a single by Nick Swisher scoring Damon, Teixiera moving to 2nd. Teix then scores on Jorge Posada’s single. Cano then hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd. In the 4th inning, Jeter hits a single, steals 2nd base, and scores along with Teix on Cano’s double. Jason Varitek hit a grand slam off of Burnett in the 4th scoring Youkilis, J. D. Drew, and Bay. Ellsbury then homered in the 5th. David Ortiz doubled and, along with Youkilis, scored on Bay’s double, also in the 5th.
Jeter scored on Damon’s 2-run homer in the 6th. For the Sox, Green scored on Ortiz’ sacrifice double play (not very often you hear of that happening). Angel Berroa and Brett Gardner both came home on a fielding error by Pedroia in the 7th. The bats were still flying when Lowel hit a 3-run homer in the bottom half of that same inning. Robbie Cano hit another homer, this time a solo-shot, in the 8th inning. Pedroia made up for his error in the field by hitting an RBI single off of Edwar Ramirez before Lowel connected for a 3-run double in the bottom of the 8th. Finally, the bats were quieted.
Final Score: NYY: 11, BOS: 16
Season Series: BOS: 2, NYY: 0
Sunday’s game gave Boston the 3-game series sweep:
Andy Pettite was hoping to be the man to stop the Sox in their tracks, but Boston’s Justin Masterson was better. Pettite threw 6 innings, gave up 4 runs (3 of them earned) on 6 hits, 4 walks and six strikeouts. Masterson went 5.1 innings, gave up a lone run on 6 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts as well as earning the win. There were no homers in this one for any of the teams.
The Yankees lone run came in the top of the third inning. Gardner hit a sacrifice fly to score Matsui on 3rd base. In the bottom half of the same inning, Ortiz had a sacrifice fly of his own to score Ellsbury.
The damage came in the 5th inning. Varitek was walked. Then Ellsbury got a walk as well to move Varitek to 2nd base. Ortiz hits a double, scoring Varitek and moving Ellsbury to 3rd. Youkilis is intetionally walked by Pettite and Drew hits a groud-rule double to score Ortiz and Ellsbury. All of these runs came with two outs. Both bullpens did not allow a run.
After a dissappointing weekend and series, the Yanks were headed to Detroit.
Final Score: NYY: 1, BOS: 4
Season Series: BOS: 3, NYY: 0
Let’s hope they start to pick it up…
